The Resurrection in Barth and Moltmann

Both Barth and Moltmann claim that the resurrection is at the heart of the Christian message. Yet, both theologians are not prepared to place the resurrection in the same category as history, either in an attempt to avoid the lifelessness of relegating it to a past event, or due to claims of its the lack of admissibility as evidence in the court of science. This denial of the objectivity leads to deeper misunderstandings of the resurrection. Moltmann claims that the resurrection is a process not a fact, and thus is the means by which God works through history to liberate his fallen world from the effects of sin. Barth claims that the resurrection adds nothing to our reconciliation, but rather is the means by which God revealed his finished work to the first disciples. Both positions fail to sufficiently emphasise the objective revivification of Jesus Christ that was necessary for him to succeed in his mission by conquering death and the devil, being exalted from his humiliation.

Appointment for 2001 announced

After many months of anticipation, my position for next year has now been announced. I have been appointed to be the Assistant Minister/ Youth Pastor at St Philips Anglican Church South Turramurra.

I am thrilled to be able to join the great team at St Philips. I will work alongside Max Boys, the Senior Minister, who has been at St Phils for around 10 years. I replace Gav Poole, who served for three and a half years.

The position will offer many opportunities to minister to the youth of the North Shore of Sydney, and will allow me on many occasions to use music in my talks. In particular, there should be many opportunities in the local schools, including scripture seminars and chapels.

Mandy, Liana, Jemimah and I move on the 28th of November to our new house. The address is 36 Parkinson Avenue, South Turramurra NSW 2074.

We would welcome your prayers as we make this exciting move in only 8 weeks! I still have lots of College work before then, so I need to remain focused on my studies before the new phase of my life!

Does God have feelings?

For nearly the entire history of Christendom it has been held that God does not have feelings. Yet, how is it that this could be maintained despite the frequent references in Scripture to his emotions? And for what reason was it so emphatically held? The suffering of the 20th century has led to a dramatic reversal of this monolithic doctrine. Yet, is this simply a modern reaction, or is there validity in accepting a radical revision to this view of the character of God?

Moore College Chapel Sermon

On the 13th of July I had my one chance in my College degree to preach at Moore College Chapel.

As you might expect, I was not content to simply do the expected. Instead, I wrote two songs (’Tell Me The Truth’ and ‘Lord Of All Things’) which were based on the passage from Colossians 1:15-20.

So what were the reactions? On the whole, I received lots of really helpful feedback. This I was able to put into place when I delivered a very modified version of the sermon at St Mark’s Darling Point on the 23rd of July.

The sermon stimulated lots of discussion about the form and content of sermons, and how it is that we can use music in that setting.
