TWIST Music Conference a hit!

Colin Buchanan is joined on stage by special guests Liana and Jemimah McNeill!

This weekend, over 350 delegates joined together for the second annual TWIST Music Conference. Featuring talks by Mike Raiter, and music from Colin Buchanan, Nathan Tasker and Nicky Chiswell, the weekend was a wonderful success.

This joint venture of Emu Music (www.emu.mu) and Anglican Youthworks (www.youthworks.net) provided practical music training, as well as two talks on the theology of music and song.

A highlight of the conference was the Saturday night with Colin, especially for me, as I was given the privilege to interview him, and also to see my two girls join him on stage for ‘Isaiah 53:6’ (see photo).

My role was to chair the sessions, which included an hour-long interview with Colin, a performance with Nathan Tasker, a panel with some guests, and the two standard sessions. I also conducted a training session called ‘Youth Ministry and Music’.

Melbourne Youth Ministry Conference

Delegates visit the rooftop of Central Baptist Church, as part of the 'City Walk'

During the week beginning the 12th July, I attended the Melbourne Youth Ministry Conference, held at Ridley College. The first half of the conference aimed to address the theology of youth ministry, and featured papers by Peter Corney, Stephen Hales, David Tacey, Alan Hirsch, David Fuller, Graham Stanton (reading a paper by Andy Stirrup), Fuzz Kitto, Ken Moser and myself.

My paper ‘Edification and Youth Ministry’ examined the theology of Edification within the Bible, and its application to youth ministry. I expect this paper to be published at some stage in the future.

Youthworks College Intensive Lectures Finish

Lecturing at Youthworks College.

Over the past two weeks I have taught the Youth Ministry Intensive at Youthworks College. This 30 hour course began with the theology and philosophy of youth ministry, which was followed by practical skills in leading youth.

The class comprised nearly 40 youth ministers and leaders, many of whom were beginning their two year course at the College. Three of the students joined us from the overseas countries of New Zealand, Belgium and the US.

Notable were the students from the Sydney Anglican Georges River Region who attended on a bursary (i.e. they came for free!) Special thanks to Regional Council for this terrific boost to youth and children’s ministry in that region.

The fourteen-unit course began with an examination of Biblical principles of ministry, including issues such as church growth, ecclesiology, and the nature of Christian ministry. From this foundation, the course moved to develop practical skills in youth ministry, from big groups to small.

Over 500 Trained in The Blue Mountains

Training at KYLC in 'The Tin Shed' to over 200 delegates each week

Over the past two weeks I have had the opportunity to train over 500 people in youth ministry. This occurred at KYLC (The Katoomba Youth Leadership Convention) and LIT (The Leaders in Training Camp).

The main training happened for the first-time KYLC delegates, who attended ‘Essentials of Youth Ministry’. This three-hour session was held over two afternoons, and provided both a theoretical foundation and practical steps in youth ministry.

In addition, I also taught the third-year KYLC delegates in the workshop ‘Dealing with Trouble’, as well as conducting a seminar for the main KYLC leaders.

At LIT I ran a one-hour session on youth ministry essentials for the high-school aged campers, as well as providing feedback on youth activities.
